Universal time preference

Time preferences are central to human decision making; therefore, a thorough understanding of their international differences is highly relevant. Previous measurements, however, vary widely in methodology, from questions answered on the Likert scale lottery-type questions. We show that these different measurements correlate large degree and they have common factor can predict broad spectrum variables: countries’ credit ratings, gasoline prices (as proxy for environmental protection), equity risk premiums, average years school attendance. The resulting data this time preference N = 117 countries regions will be useful further research. Our aggregation method applicable merge cross-cultural studies measure same latent construct with methodologies.
